Photowalking

I missed most of the Scrap Girls Staycation Week fun.  My husband,Steve, and I were out of town attending the National Lutheran Secretariat (of Via de Cristo) National Meeting in West Palm Beach Florida.  Steve  is on the Board as Treasurer, and I attended as a visitor.  What a wonderful destination for a conference!  While Steve was in meetings, I used the opportunity to behave as if I were on vacation.  I went to the beach, took a nap, and took my camera for a couple of walks around the city.

And since we were down that far, we thought it would be a good idea to take a couple of extra days and drive down to Key West to get some real vacation time in together.  Boy was that a good idea!  We had a wonderful time.

We returned just in time for me to catch the tail end of Staycation week.  Wednesday's theme was Historic Downtown - the theme I had in mind when I created the Photo Walk Collection Mini.  I got caught up in all the excitement and was ready to scrap some of the photos I took in West Palm Beach and Key West, and to use the collection.

In doing so, I found that I wanted an alpha to coordinate with the "ransom note" type word art and some paper backgrounds that weren't so busy.  So as I was making my layouts, I put together a Photo Walk Alpha Mini and Photo Walk Solids Paper Mini, and put them into the boutique this week.

Scrap Girls "Staycation" Event - Road Trip!

July means that it’s the Scrap Girls annual Staycation – and this year we are heading out on a Road Trip!

Stop at the Event Page to find out all the details of the Scrap Girls Staycation Event - ROAD TRIP! A sale! Prizes! New products! Chats! Games! Free gifts! Here we go!

And of course, there's a sale!

I created a special collection mini just for the occasion!  For me, a staycation means acting like a tourist in your own stomping grounds.  What better way to do that than grabbing your camera and heading into town, to a local public garden, or a historical site nearby?  Find hidden treasures with your camera lens!  This little collection will help you document your excursion.

Here's a layout with a collection of photos that I took in West Reading:

Alrighty now - grab your camera, and let's go!

Mermaid Mystique

Well, here it is!  In all honesty, I could have gone on designing this collection forever.  The sirens that they are, these mermaids captivated and mystified me!  I wanted to include so much more, go in different directions, but I had to be disciplined and limit myself, keeping to my original vision.  Here's the collection:

In my original vision, my papers would be misty, watery abstract backgrounds that would just give you the feeling of the ocean. Normally I use a combination of textures, patterns and color overlays to make my papers, and they turn out rather quickly and easily.  This time I used photographs, lots of brushes and filters, and I experimented with the art history brush tool in Photoshop.  I taught myself some new techniques, but it was very time consuming.  I made a ton of backgrounds, but there were only a dozen or so that I really liked.  I just wasn't going to have enough papers to turn out a collection "Biggie."

Consequently, I found myself with an over-abundance of embellishments.  I looked through them all and found a theme within a theme - treasure!  So I took most of the treasure and put it together in an embellishment mini.  I added a couple of pirate coins for good measure.  To make these, I modified a style that I created when I designed the coins in another of my collections, Via Dolorosa Collection Mini.

When I design a collection, I make layouts during the process rather than at the end.  That way, it's the photos and the scrapping process that determine what works and what doesn't.  I know you'll get a product that you can use to make your own layouts, not something that just looks pretty in the boutique but won't get used.  In one of my favorite layouts, I used a mask that I created and clipped a paper to, to make a border.  And rather than leave you alone to figure out how I did it, I just included the mask in the layered scrapbook page file that comes with this JIF Plus:

And in case you hadn't guessed yet, all three products are available together in a Value Pack!

And here are the layouts!

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into the design process of this collection. I hope you have fun using it on your own digital scrapbook pages and hybrid crafts!

From Inspiration to Reality

If you follow me on Facebook, you may remember my post with this photo:

I'd said that, while I could never pull off wearing the dress, I loved the colors and the pattern.  I could make a digital scrapbook collection out of it.  Well, I did just that!

This collection was such fun to make!  I took inspiration from all over. The bold chevron patterns and the colors are taken right from the dress.  The sunglasses are modeled after my daughter's new pair.  The flip flops have a similar pattern to a pair in my closet.

Pinwheels - they are everywhere.  I felt like a little kid again the Saturday morning I spent making a pinwheel out of cardstock.  I scanned it, extracted it, and then colored it all different colors.  I thought a popsicle on the scanner would be a little messy, so I used a photograph.  And of course the paint splotches were made with digital brushes - so there's no mess there!

I ended up with way to much to fit into one collection, so I made coordinating products.  Coordinating solid paper backgrounds are always good:

And how about a coordinating JIF6? Make a customizable layout in minutes with this kit's included PSD file!  Includes individual JPG and PNG files.
Here are some layouts I created using the collection.  I hope they inspire you!

Save some money! All three products are available in a Value Pack:

It was a cold, hard winter, but suddenly, it's Summer!  This collection is designed with the warm colors of summer, splashed with cool aqua.  It's packed with fun, summery embellishments and energetic patterns.  Perfect for layouts about the pool, beach, picnics, vacations, or any summer leisure activities.

I'm Back!

Yea, life gets in the way.  It seems that in April, all my design time was devoted to getting my May Scrap Girls Club ready.

Mayfair Collection Biggie
Part of the May Scrap Girls Club

I must have really worked my computer hard designing the club, because she started limping hard afterward.  She slowed to a near screeching halt.  I would give her a command in Photoshop, and sometimes I'd have to wait nearly a minute, watching that spinny blue circle, for her to come through.  Something had to be done.

I had a new collection in the works, and I was trying to wait until I was finished before I did anything drastic.  But it got to where I just couldn't work like that any longer.  I cried "uncle" and decided to do a complete system restore.  I did backups of my backups, documented all my software registration keys, and made sure I had my program installation files ready to re-install.  That done, I held my breath and hit F11.

All went smoothly.  I was excited to have a fresh new machine again.  Then the heart attack when the beast would not read my 3 TB EHD.  Would I really have to download my backup from cloud storage - oh the horror!  It turns out that another computer on our network - the trusty old XP machine - recognized the EHD.  I was able to recover my files over our home network.

Now I could really work again!  And finally, I finished that collection I started nearly a month ago.  It's in the Scrap Girls boutique now!

I hope you enjoy it!
